Transport of alcohol and tobacco within the EU
Transporting animals, plants, alcohol and other products
When entering Romania from a third country, you must declare and present to the customs authority the goods in your possession or in your personal luggage. You may declare your goods in writing or orally by passing through the green or ‘nothing to declare’ corridor at customs offices where a two-corridor control system is in operation, or by passing through a customs office that does not use the two-corridor system, without making a voluntary customs declaration.
The tobacco and alcohol products listed below may be imported free of customs duty, VAT and excise duty.
Tobacco products:
- 40 cigarettes;
- 100 cigarillos (cigars of a maximum weight of 3 grams each);
- 50 cigars;
- 250 g smoking tobacco.
Alcoholic beverages:
- a total of 1 litre of alcohol and alcoholic beverages, distillates and spirits containing more than 22 % alcohol by volume, or undenatured ethyl alcohol of 80 % volume and above;
- a total of 2 litres of alcohol and alcoholic beverages containing less than 22 % alcohol by volume;
- 4 litres of still wines and 16 litres of beer.
The nature or quantity of these goods must not be such as to indicate that they are being imported for commercial reasons.
No exemption is granted to travellers under the age of 17 for tobacco products, alcohol and alcoholic beverages.
Rules, rights and information on transporting alcohol and tobacco within the EU can be found on the Europa Ta page.
